It’s been weeks of going without some of our favourite things. Drive thrus, our mum’s roasts, chatting over fancy coffees, nights out, and good food where we don’t have to cook. It might be a little while longer until we can sit in restaurants again, but luckily the best Italian eateries in lockdown Liverpool have been working away so that we can have a little bit of Italy at home in the meantime.
Head to the Casa Italia for your much-missed favourites on their delivery and collection menu. Everyone knows to expect queues up the street at the Casa when they’re open, so make sure you get in there early with your lockdown orders too because they are chocker. Expect 1/1.5 hour waits at weekends. Follow them on Instagram to make your mouth water and check out their opening times throughout the week.
My favourite caffé and deli Paolo & Donato on Williamson Square is now open for drinks and sweet treats to take away of a daytime. Visit for coffee and a box of cannoli or the best gelato in town. Follow the P&D’s Deli Facebook Page for more info. Meanwhile P&D Italian Bakery is the best around for authentic panini and sourdough bread.
Tucked away in Campbell Square behind the bottom of Duke Street is award-winning family friendly restaurant Amalia, cooking up a storm with delivery and collection available. Choose some of the best pizza and pasta you’ll ever taste from their lockdown menu and save yourself the washing up. Kids love their ‘Americana’ french fries pizza (it’s a pizza… with chips on) but I think I’ll stick to a classic margherita myself, grazie.
Not far away you’ll find A Tavola, where in normal times you can pick up wonderful Italian ingredients, have something to eat and drink, or cook yourself into an Italian cookery class (already on my post lockdown bucket list!). I can’t wait to go back to A Tavola when the coast is clear for pastries and a giant pot of tiramisu hot chocolate, but in the meantime you can shop their deli on deliveroo for quality pasta, cured meats, and Italian cheeses.
A beautiful Italian lockdown collaboration is Il Forno x Crust, working together to keep customers happy by sharing kitchens. While the Duke Street ristorante is making the most of lockdown and undergoing refurbishment, the guys at Il Forno have teamed up with Bold Street faves Crust covering all Italian bases.
Grab summery Antipasti boxes from Il Forno perfect for socially distant picnics and enjoy with a bottle of wine or aperol spritz to go with it. Meanwhile, order via Crust for family bundles and your usual favourites. It’s my son’s first choice pizzeria in town and I’m a big fan of their creamy mushroom bruschetta and Quattro formaggio pizza.
Further out of town – and perfect for those who can’t collect centrally (or who are beyond delivery range) – Di Scala’s Maghull based pizzeria has got the dough flying every weekend during lockdown until they sell out. Get your orders in early for collection only at this authentic Italian gem tucked away in north Liverpool.
Back in town on Stanley Street, La Famiglia have been knocking it out the park during this lockdown period, bringing the best Italian food to Liverpool. Not only have they got the finest pasta and deli produce available to shop, their fabulous Take Me Home menu for collection or delivery featuring hot dishes, salads, desserts and your favourite beer and Prosecco. Pre ordering is highly recommended.
Last but certainly not least, Rudy’s Pizza on Castle Street – home to what many describe as the best pizza they’ve ever had – has finally announced their lockdown opening this week. Order your authentic Naples style pizza on Deliveroo or for collection after 5 o’clock.
Grazie Mille to all the staff working hard to keep us fed and happy. We look forward to visiting again when this is all over. In the meantime, whether you’re trying your hand at home-made Italian meals, or getting the real thing delivered, Buon Appetito and Stay Safe.
